Overview
 
* Asphalt : the product of oil-refining industry; the natural state is hot condensed, black
* Usage: The material in production of asphalt concrete which is used in the construction of roads, airports, stations, and others.
* Classification of asphalt:
 
- Hot hot condensed asphalt: heated in the temperature of 120oC to 145oC, transported in
liquid form.
 
- Hot condensed asphalt: stored in barrels, in polymer packages at environment
temperature. For usage, it must be heated to the melting point so as to turn into liquid
form, then taken off the barrels and moved to asphalt concrete mixer station.
MC asphalt, emulsion asphalt, polymer asphalt,…: are the products of asphalt in liquid
form, contained in barrels or transported by tankers, ISO tank.
 
For hot hot condensed asphalt, in liquid form:
Liquid asphalt is preserved in the temperature of 120oC to 145oC . Hot hot condensed
asphalt, in liquid form at 120oC to 145oC is preserved during the storing process in
warehouse and transported by tankers to mixer stations.
- Barrel-stored asphalt is packaged directly from hot hot condensed asphalt, in liquid
form, and cooled to environment temperature. These barrels are stored in warehouse.
- Products from MC asphalt: directly produced, made up in asphalt warehouse and sold
by two ways: transporting by tankers (liquid), and packaging in 200 liter steel barrels.
- Products from CRS emulsion asphalt consumed domestically are mostly imported from
abroad.
Liquid asphalt
 
Description
- Liquid asphalt is the product of mixing hot condensed asphalt with oil in appropriate
proportion.
- Condensed asphalt is the product of oil refining technology; includes polymer
hydrocacbua compounds such as CnH2n+2, CnH2n, aromatic ring hydrocacbua (CnH2n-6) and some odd rings containing oxygen, nitrogen, and sulphur.
- In natural state, liquid asphalt is liquid, black
- The label of liquid asphalt is specified by the degree of viscosity, which includes 5
degree: 10-20, 20-40, 40-80, 80-140, 140-250
- Based on the freezing rate, liquid asphalt can be classified into 3 types:
+quick freezing liquid asphalt
+medium freezing liquid asphalt
+slow freezing liquid asphalt
- Within the material, we just mention MC 30 and MC 70 liquid asphalts, which are two
medium freezing liquid asphalts with minimum viscosity of 30 and 70 and currently
widely used in the construction of transport works in Vietnam.
 
Application
Liquid asphalt is the material in the construction of roads, and transport works. Liquid
asphalt is commonly used to sprinkle the road surface, or acts as the sticky layers
between two sheets of asphalt concrete.
Condensed asphalt
Description
- Condensed asphalt consist of two types:
+ Bitum condensed asphalt: the condensed asphalt originating from oil
+Tar condensed asphalt: the condensed asphalt origanating from coal
Within the material, we just mention Bitum condensed asphalt.
- Condensed asphalt is the product of oil refining technology; includes polymer
hydrocacbua compounds such as CnH2n+2, CnH2n, aromatic ring hydrocacbua (CnH2n-6) and
some odd rings containing oxygen, nitrogen, and sulphur.
 
- In natural state, liquid asphalt is liquid, black
- Condensed asphalt is waterproof but can be dissolved in benzen (C6H6), cloruafooc
(CHCl3), disulfur cacbon (CS2), and some other organic solvents
- Depending on the manufaturing condition, condensed asphalt is classified into labeling
asphalt with different needle deflection. This material refers to 5 degree of needle
deflection of condensed asphalt : 40/60, 60/70, 70/100, 100/150, 150/250.
- Condensed asphalt heated to appropriate temperature (1630C) and mixed with such
materials as stone, sand, gravel in suitable proportion will become asphalt concrete.
- Condensed asphalt mixed in appropriate proportion with oil, diezel, will become liquid
asphalt and mixed with emulsifying agents and water will become emulsion asphalt
Application
- The main application of condensed asphalt is to produce asphalt concrete, liquid
asphalt, and asphalt emulsion for the construction of road and transport works.
- Besides, condensed asphalt can be used to process surface, waterproof or connect the
shingles in construction industry.
 
Package – Preservation
 
Commercial condensed asphalt consists of two main types:
* Condensed asphalt in liquid form: stored, transported by specialized equipments such
as asphalt transporting ships, tanks, pipes, asphalt tankers with insulation, heating system
to ensure the temperature of asphalt from 120oC to 145oC .
* Condensed asphalt in barrel: stored, transported by barrels with capacity of 150 to 200
litre in normal temperature condition.
 
SAFETY – ENVIRONMENT
 
Condensed asphalt is an oil refining product so it can be harmful or badly affects the
environment and human health if not preserved and used in accordance with proper
technical procedure.
 
Especially for liquid asphalt, due to the fact that it is usually stored in high temperature,
the chances of fire, explosion and burning during transporting and using process are
likely.
 
Asphalt emulsion
 
Description
- Asphalt emulsion is the product of properly mixing condensed asphalt with emulsifying
agents and water in steady emulsion form.
- Condensed asphalt is the product of oil refining technology; includes polymer
hydrocacbua compounds such as CnH2n+2, CnH2n, aromatic ring hydrocacbua (CnH2n-6) and
some odd rings containing oxygen, nitrogen, and sulphur.
- Based on colloidal particle structures, asphalt emulsion can be classified into invert
asphalt emulsion and asphalt emulsion upon. Based on the sticky- to- stone property,
asphalt emulsion is classified into alkaline asphalt emulsion (well-sticked to stone
originating from lime) and acidic asphalt emulsion (well-sticked to stone originating from
silicon). Based on the popuplarity in use in Vietnam, this material just mentions acidic
asphalt emulsion upon.
 
- In natural state, asphalt emulsion is liquid, dark brown and evenly.
- Depending on the splitting rate, asphalt emulsion can be classified into 3 types:
+Rapid-splitting asphalt emulsion
+Medium-splitting asphalt emulsion
+Slow-splitting asphalt emulsion
 
Application:
Asphalt emulsion is the material in the construction of roads, and transport works. Liquid
asphalt emulsion is used to sprinkle the road surface or acts as the sticky layers between
two sheets of asphalt concrete
 
Commercial asphalt emulsion is preserved, transported in barrels with the capacity of 150 to 200 litre or by sprinkling-dedicated vehicle in normal temperature condition.
 
Asphalt emulsion is an oil-refining product, therefore, it can be harmful or badly affects
the environment and human health if not preserved and used in accordance with proper
technical procedure.
 
Asphalt concrete is the compound of stone, sand, mineral powder and asphalt, mainly
used to make the road surface structure soft.
 
Hot asphalt concrete is mainly produced at hot asphalt concrete mixer station.
In order to get the asphalt concrete, the flow of materials is shipped up and weighed by
electronic scale system to ensure the accuracy and minimize the error.
After that, all the materials are moved into the mixing chamber, where things such as
stones of big, medium an small – size, sand and additivies are dry - mixed together.
About 20s later, asphalt is sprayed in foggy-form together with other materials, the
mixing wings in the chamber continue to stir for about 25-30s and then released through
the discharge door of the mixing chamber.
Hot asphalt concrete: the compound is heated and mixed in the temperature of 140oC –
160oC. The asphalt must be as hot as 90-100oC when it is used for construction. The
products include:
 
Fine particle hot asphalt concrete
Medium particle hot asphalt concrete
Rough particle hot asphalt concrete
